Weren't Socrates and Plato mostly interested in ethics? Aristotle would say that ethics is what defines man as man, and that without it we're just like any other species. It is pretty obvious from these examples alone that the ancients had moral concerns and debated them widely.Olivier5

Jumping from the Roman world to the Greek does not favor his speech. A Greek citizen was not a woman, not a wage earner, not a slave, not a young man, not an old man. You should read Politics by Aristotle. The cited opinion of Thrasymachus appears in the Republic. Also the ideas in favor of eugenics. We really don't know anything about Socrates. He didn't write anything. Xenophon describes him as someone very religious, a fundamentalist. Plato's evaluation was very uneven. In Apology he introduced a hero. In the Sophist to a charlatan. He forgot about him after that dialogue. But Plato is not to be trusted. He collects many opinions with which he habitually disagrees.
You manipulate the historical discourse to your liking. What you define as philosophy belongs to a very specific discourse, the Christian one.

WTF is a Christian translation of Latin?Olivier5

Christianity became the Roman state religion with Constantine. All the terminological senses that you contribute as contitutives of the Roman axiology are Christian. Between the 6th century BC and the year 313 AD there was a long time in which the prevailing axiology was paganism, which has to do with the speech of Thrasymachus, but nothing with what you attribute to it.

You speak to a Latinist and Hellenist by profession. Read the Iliad and Aeneid before cutting and pasting from a dictionary. The list you give is the Christian translation of Latin terms.

Paganism? Can you be a little more specific? The voodoo? The norse gods? The cult of Isis? Hinduism?Olivier5
Greco-Roman paganism never speaks of helping the weak. For instance. Rather, they were thrown into the circus.

Not even me! What I am driving at is that a philosophy should not just be about what is the case, which is rather the domain of science, but also and primarily in what ought to be the case, which behaviors are desirable and which are not. What goals should we pursue? etc.

For me, a decent philosophy cannot be value-less.
    Olivier5

That seems more like the domain of the Christian religion (because paganism doesn't seem interested in duty either).

By this reasoning, it's a-okay to kill people... Hence your monism cannot support a healthy human society but may be useful philosophy for serial killers.Olivier5

You and the mosquitoes are in the same business. They try to suck your blood and you try to avoid malaria, dengue, etc. Unites States was forged on the largest genocide in history. 50 million natives were exterminated. Nor were the Indians peaceful. They were already killing each other. The 6 million of "the final solution" are comparatively speaking a trifle. The world has always been ruled by murderers, not serial, but mass. You may not like it. But nobody said life was fair. One thing is what the duty is and another what happens.
  • A very expensive book.

    The book exists.
The author too. His name is Adel Habib. Lebanese. Phoenician.
The first book sold for € 25,000. The seventh book, for € 85,000. The book was later discontinued.
The publisher is an American based in Kaiserslautern. His name is Harry Pross.
    I have the email addresses.
    What do you think, smartass?

  • Dating and code talk.
Went on a movie date today. Seemed to go pretty well and there didn't seem to be too much weird energy which is atypical when I'm involved. We had similar reactions throughout movie so it wasn't dead silence the whole time. We hugged and went home. I texted asking if she would like to hang out again. She had expressed having had a good time. She said she was also seeing someone else and had decided to go to the next level with them and suggested we be friends. But if she was already committed to commitment with this other guy why go on a date with me? It seems logical that this was a brush off, and yet she doesn't seem the type. I anticipate that as friends we will talk less and less until she's simply too busy to be bothered. Anyone see this situation any differently?TiredThinker

If she says "I love you as a friend", run away, bro.

The older brother "feels" left out, or somewhat abandoned by the parents attention to and upon the younger brother. Peace1 Brother James

WTF. If my son hits his little brother, I will kick his ass for being a coward. If you hit someone smaller than you because he is defenseless, why do you think your father is not going to apply the same logic to you, idiot? And if he persists in his bad attitude, he would put him up for adoption. He is probably not my son, but a chromosome aberration. Genetics has interesting moments.

    I'm shaking.

All right, smart guy. That book, if it exists, will be traceable. We know that:
    1. The title will be Habib's Metaphysics or something like that.
    2. The Author will be of Arabic origin, but he has written in Spanish.
    3. The edition of that book is very limited.

    3. There are only three places in the world where producing this type of valuable object is profitable: USA, Germany and Japan.
    2. Immigrants from Spain, Turkey, Pakistan and Syria have converged for generations in Germany.
    4. Germany has next to home: the Freeport Luxembourg, where there are no taxes and customs fees do not exist, and the Geneva.

I bet the editor is probably German.

I just signed up to tell you something: you must be a very young person. There are more things in heaven and on earth than your philosophy imagines, little Marxist.
