What's the best way to learn philosophy?:DesperateBeing

Just talk along and google difficult words. Write them up!
  • What is a Fact?
    Goddamn!Janus

    I wasn't notified. What's your point? Godsdamned!
  • You are not your body!
So, what is this YOU? It is the spirit, soul, elan vital and other names people have given to the vital princeple, the animating force and the identity itself of the human being.Alkis Piskas

Do you experience an identity crisis? If you look in the mirror, who do you see? Your body! That's you! Yor in the middle, in between, the inner world (inside the brain) and the physical world. You can't be separated from both. So, dance in between them and listen closely...
  • You are not your body!
I have read the book "We are our brain", only to come to the conclusion that the guy who wrote it was an ugly brainf....r. No wonder he thinks he is his brain. But to say "we" are. as in the title of that book shows an brainocentric attitude.
  • What is a Fact?
Well, as they say, progress is not inevitable... :wink:Tom Storm

  • What is a Fact?
How do you validate the existence of gods?Athena

I can't validate their existence. I just dreamed of them and knew unconsciously. But know I'm conscious. But I don't give a F..k about them. I'm just happy they created it all. How created them, I asked myself. They are eternal. They even know no time. Then what's the difference with an eternal universe? A big deal!
  • What is a Fact?
    Why not?Janus

Because it can't exist on its own. The string landscape (but with strings replaced by my own structures) is too beautifull for that. How can such beaurty exist without (a) creator(s)? Is it just eternal? I remember asking my mum where the gods are while staring out of the airplane window. In my teens I ridiculed god(s). My mom was wrong with her gods. After my physics study this continued a while. In my end twenties the gods are back.
  • What theory of truth do you subscribe to, and why?
Do you think coherentism with accessibility relations (e.g. science/empirical observations/mathematical instrumentality) ascertain or determine the world as most evident/accurately according to how nature works? Why or why not?

Otherwise, what's your take on theories of truth given the recent topics about 'facts'? Thanks.
    Shawn

I have a very idiosyncratic take on this. But I'm not sure you wanna hear my accesability to the world and corresponding with it view. Maybe I don't have enough time also.
  • What is a Fact?
What is it about its being there that makes it obvious it was created by gods?Janus

The universe can't be there (even if eternal and infinite) if not created by gods.
  • You are not your body!
"I am", in fact, the emergent, recursively continuous, output of this body's interactions with its environment.180 Proof

In fact according to your factuality.
  • What is a Fact?
What makes it obvious to you I wonder?Janus

The very fact that it's there.
  • Against Stupidity
Nonsense. People are generally driven to please their egos, above everything else.baker

I can't agree more. And as long as you let other people act out their egos in freedom there is nothing wrong with that, though my lovely wife tells me repeatedly my talk and acts will get me in trouble. Well, better acting and talking as I like it and die than to conform and live. There are a lot of people who wouldn't give a hand if I were drowning. Jealous people mainly. I'm a pretty well-dressed guy (red velvet jacket, white T-shirt, blue-jeans, and brown cowboy boots) and I have things to say. Difficult to digest for some people, especially for my neighbor, a serious guy.
  • What is a Fact?
The creation of the world by the gods would be a fact if the gods actually created the world.Janus

    Obviously they did.
  • You are not your body!

You are nothing but your body. The brain is not part of you. It merely constitutes your inner world. Matter is more strange than you think. Than your thoughts show you. Matter's nature can't be known, though it can be felt. You are what you eat.
