What do you do for work Michael?
  • What afterlife do you believe awaits us after death?
    ↪Greylorn Ell

How long could one remain in this 'soul state' for? And it sounds like you believe fate to be set out before us?
  • Is it wrong to talk behind someone’s back?
    ↪praxis

    Yeah I agree with this
  • Do you agree with the concept of anarchism?
    ↪Frank Apisa

Looks like I won’t be doing any travel what with corona and the works. I’ll watch some videos on it though
  • Do you agree with the concept of anarchism?
    ↪NOS4A2

Are there any feasible ways to examine it more properly and be able to ascertain its chances of success?
  • Do you agree with the concept of anarchism?
    ↪Frank Apisa

    Ok then.
  • Do you agree with the concept of anarchism?
    ↪Frank Apisa

Are civilization and true democracy really such lofty ideals? Secondly anarchism is the polar opposite to fascism so it hardly seems reasonable to be so opposed to both policies.

I'd have to go poor mans and that doesn't sound like fun

If by this you mean most of the other discussions I've started have been on the lounge that doesn't seem to be a legitimate enough reason to move something. I have really enjoyed people really diving into the question I posed and I feel like questions relating to the afterlife and death are a religious philosophical topic, not a random dicussion.

Ok that’s for the tips

Ah how interesting, I’ll have to do more reading up about Buddhism then.
  • What afterlife do you believe awaits us after death?
Well, there is no 'walking' after legs stop moving.

And no 'symphony' after the orchestra stops playing and disbands.

nice analogies, I like your firm opinions too

I feel like the person could go through a period of hatred for his mother, even one of a hundred years. This could be caused by some realisation or understanding of something that his mother did. It could be that they have a falling out

    ↪neonspectraltoast

Yes and that would make up who you are, but wouldn’t that change for you individually over time?

  • Problem solving thread
I’m thinking about buying a computer, it might be bad for my mental health in terms of staying indoors and not exercising as much. The upsides are that during this quarantine time I’ll be able to talk with friends and play online games, increasing my socialising and it could be great for my mental health. It’s also pretty costly and I don’t have a solid income at the moment. It will last for many years into the future though.

Any opinions for what I should do?

I like this, you sort of answer the question in a roundabout way but it delivers the point more than you could have directly.

I like your outlook on this, hopefully I can become comfortable with not being sure what after-death looks like one day. Because an issue with your lifestyle of living more virtuously than not is, what if the hindu religion is in fact true. In that case because you didn't pay proper respects to the proper deities you go to hell (for example) and you could have prevented it and in fact been reincarnated into a better life if you had just said a few prayers or something. Or if the christian worldview is correct, in that case because you didn't accept christ into your heart you don't make it into heaven.

All this to say you have essentially covered all of this with your statements that you would rather be in hell anyway instead of a heaven which you feel like you didn't earn, (is that right?) and that you can be happy with your own efforts to be living virtuously.

Not exactly, I would say identity is how you perceive yourself and how others perceive you. If this is a legitimate definition for identity then it would change with how society changes.

You would view yourself as different compared with society.

Others would view you differently as judged against themselves.

I don’t believe in an afterlife, I don’t really know what I believe at this point, I’m just asking questions and trying to come to some sort of conclusion. So thanks for sharing your opinions.

This is a great post, the testimonial idea definitely holds a lot of stock. Are you thinking about them in a specific case or religion?
  • What afterlife do you believe awaits us after death?
    ↪InPitzotl

This makes sense, yeah. This is not taking into account a religious aspect though?
  • What afterlife do you believe awaits us after death?
    ↪tim wood

I see what you’re saying. So for right now the only evidence is that we die and there is no evidence pointing to anything after that. This does discount religions though...?
  • Temporary vs Eternal personality
    ↪Eugen

I’d say it’s quite possible that they could fluctuate to the same degrees you’ve laid out. An eternity is an unfathomably long time and the switch between personalities could happen over the course of thousands of years so it could happen. I don’t think there is a set of morals strong enough to guide someone through all of eternity and they are bound to have slip ups, potentially terrible ones. There is also the chance for periods of huge success, wonderful breakthroughs or ideas.

How are you able to be so sure in your opinion? Have you found some proof that shows that there is no afterlife?
  • What afterlife do you believe awaits us after death?
    ↪tim wood

I agree that those people are all dead. Can you prove that their consciousnesses are not still present at some level or at some place? There is no proof that there is no afterlife.
  • Ethics of knowingly exposing others to infection
    ↪petrichor

At a base level I completely agree, it seems like a terrible offence and could even be punishable by the death sentence. The issue is that it is (hopefully) completely without malice, they are perhaps trying to care for their family. If someone leaves a rock on a doorstep and many people trip and fall, he person that left the rock isn’t really culpable, even if they did make a grave mistake.

Are you saying I should attempt to come into contact with the divine? I’d be open to trying but I’m not sure how to go about it. Also what do you mean by available evidence?
  • Temporary vs Eternal personality
This is a really interesting concept. What you suggest in that the characters' personality might materialize into something eternal implies that the person found the perfect way to live. This begs the question is it possible for a human to eventually become perfect? I think it calls into question the divine aspect, can a human attain a god-like perspective given enough time?

An example is that in this day and age we have history from the past thousands of years. Humanity is at the forefront of advancements technologically and socially. Is society any better than it was a thousand years ago? Have we really developed at all, as we still commit terrible atrocities against one and other.

I think what I'm trying to get at is would we ever really get to a constant, and I don't think we would. I think that as humans we fluctuate too much and our consciousnesses don't have the capacity to become perfect.

Perfect is the state we would have to achieve to want to remain in a constant personality for all eternity.
  • What is imagination?
    ↪ztaziz

I feel like there is no right and wrong answer to this question, as people are different and perceive things differently. One person might project an image of an apple in their mind like you gave the example of. Another might imagine an apple and get a ghost taste of an apple on their tongue. Yet another might simply see the word 'apple' flash in their mind's eye.
Though I like your definition for imagination: "A personal power for projection"
Another point regarding Imagination is that in this day and age with so much access to constant stimulation, video games, movies, social media etc, we are rarely bored and so have no need for our imagination. I wonder if as society 'develops' our collective imaginations will begin to die off.
