• Objective Vs. Subjective Truth

Thanks for the input. Though I’m thinking after being on this forum, I am reminded that Philosophy asks questions that other subjects have done away with. And I can think/believe anything I want on these matters, including religion. Because nothing in Philosophy has been proven so there will be pros and cons on any view. Seems like a waste of time. Thanks all.

Yes not wear a mask etc. If it doesn’t break the law, most people feel bad doing this though.

How does Philosophy today lead us to science?
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law
All I ever wanted was to know the real truths about the world. I think I have that now for me, which is taking a step back from the world and looking at the Universe from above it, where there is nothing. Then you can see all of existence for what it is, whatever that might be.

Before I’d be outside as a child, staring at a plant, thinking, ‘I can’t quite work this out’. I.e. life, existence, the Universe. I’m done now, the only chance I’d be wrong is if the Universe is infinite. But again, I am entitled to my opinion because nobody knows if the Universe is infinite or not.

Just to clarify. I think the laws are what are right and wrong. If you don’t like it, get out or cry out the injustice and make sure you’re not going to be alone before you do this. My opinion basically doesn’t matter if I come up against a law, and I don’t want to go to prison unless I have to and the laws of my country don’t make me miserable so I’m okay with them. Going to prison would make me miserable.

I still wouldn’t bother trying to change the laws or the status quo. Sure you can have your own views of ethics (see title) but I’ll never change anyone’s mind, not likely. I don’t need to say what everyone else should do, I’ll just say what I would do and see if anyone would come up with any problems with that idea. I do vote (Lib Dem). But they’ll unlikely ever win an election and I had a limited choice of parties to begin with. I am basically powerless, but my view is the title, which sort of includes the ethics live and let live.
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

I still wouldn’t try to change a law if it was wrong, I don’t have time to change the world it’s just not worth the time. I suppose I still have trust in my society, maybe if I lived somewhere where the laws were making my life miserable, maybe I’d try to get out of that country, even if illegally, because it would be worth it, by weighing the pros and cons. Otherwise if I broke the laws of that society and was punished maybe I wouldn’t feel bad. I would cry out at the injustice of the situation and I would feel better because I’m sure I wouldn’t be alone.
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

You just weigh it, pros and cons of a decision. I personally wouldn’t break the law because I’d feel so bad of the consequences, the punishment of society, like society’s being mean to you, would be too much to bear.
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

To test my ideas? I don’t mind who it’s coming from. But it’s not like an authority figure that tells you to do things and doesn’t give any explanation why, or is open to debate. I make my own decisions.
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

What isn’t? The forum? You mean the world? Would you be happy to finish undecided though? That sounds silly to me, all that thinking about a question for nothing. Or do you plan to decide someday or ‘die trying’ ?
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law
It means you make your own mind up without forcing your opinion on other people, because people are different and have different viewpoints. But the key here is, you don’t have to listen to other people either, especially if they try to force their opinion on you. I’m happiest this way, because I make my own decisions and if it doesn’t work out, the only person I can blame is me. And if it does work out, the only person responsible is me. Doesn’t that sound nice?

I would say all knowledge and morals are baseless. Not values I don’t think. Values are principles that help you decide what is right and wrong and how to behave. A principle is a basic idea or rule. Are values personal or held by society or both? What if I don’t have the values of my society because I think they are meaningless because there are so many different cultures in the world with different values?
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

Ahhh. So what would I do if money came into play? Well, I guess I would weigh the pros and cons. Would someone who has strong morals do this too? I don’t know. How would having morals and making a decision play out?
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

I guess I think the most human thing you can do is stick to what’s true for you, what works for you.
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

Yes, thank you. I think there are no morals, it’s a personal view. Is that moral relativism?
  • Objective Vs. Subjective Truth

Yes, maybe I do think life is a big game of chance! Thank you, that makes my viewpoint clearer to me.
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law
Oh, that was just my opinion, I would definitely say it’s right for them to rip people off it makes them feel good but I would try and make them feel bad about it cos I’d feel bad if I got ripped off by them. To be honest I would try and change their behaviour if it affected me, but I might not if it didn’t.
  • Objective Vs. Subjective Truth

How do you know it won’t go up?! You’d have to know EVERYTHING, for example that miracles don’t exist? I would let you say ‘I guess it will go up’, but I wouldn’t let you say you know because you don’t know everything??? Common sense is a good way of making good guesses, that’s what you’re using, your common sense, I.e. I’ve seen it go down a million times. You never know one day you might be surprised!
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law
Oh, I don’t feel good ripping people off. There must be something wrong with people who do, I wouldn’t know how to fix that, but that would be just me forcing my opinion on others. C’est la vie.
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law
Hmm. Then I would lock him up! And/or punch him in the face!!
  • The right thing to do is what makes us feel good, without breaking the law

Sure thing, but I think you wouldn’t feel good when you’re life is screwed up, maybe that’s why it is illegal?
  • Objective Vs. Subjective Truth

I always thought people don’t really know anything, because their ideas about the world could always be proven wrong, unless you’ve met every idea in the Universe that could ever possibly be created. So impossible to prove something to be objectively true/ true because possible ideas are infinite.

Take science for an example, have you ever noticed that quite often it will change it’s mind, sometimes to the complete opposite of what it said. At school I was told to bounce on a stretch to stretch the muscles more, then later in life I went to athletics club and was told I should NEVER do that in a stretch because it could damage the muscle or something (I can’t quite remember). It made me feel like an idiot for listening to teachers in the first place!

There is one thing you can say about religion and that’s, at least it doesn’t ever change it’s mind. You could have a belief and ignore all evidence to the contrary, wouldn’t that be fun!

I would say, you got to work out what’s true for you, come up with your own beliefs, (above) and screw everyone else, including teachers and parents. I would listen to other people’s ideas in search of a contradiction, but can I do this forever? I don’t want to philosophise about life for the rest of my life! I want to live life! At some point maybe you’ve got to say, this is what I believe, and screw all evidence to the contrary. What else can you do??
  • Objective Vs. Subjective Truth

Pragmatism- If it works do it?

    Can we really know anything???
  • Objective Vs. Subjective Truth
If something is true for me and I’m happy with it, because we’re in the world and you can discover lots of falsifications of a theory. And I’m happy with it because I’ve explored the world to my own satisfaction. But if I were ever to come up with a falsification, happily could you change your theory, because the one you did have has become false. And you hope this one is true. Basically become a scientist? Isn’t that a good method of finding truth?

I think there exists objective truths, and the more objective you are, the closer you are to it. Truth could not be subjective because it would not be true for everybody, but you’re claim to it is, cos you can’t verify it with the whole world, practically!
  • Objective Vs. Subjective Truth
Yes. That sounds good. Tell me more?
  • Objective Vs. Subjective Truth
Maybe my truth is subjective, but I can argue I’m being more objective than anyone else? What does everyone else think?
  • Why was my first discussion removed?
So if I would like to post a thread titled ‘Objective Vs. Subjective Truth’, that’s most likely not original, so I would find that thread somewhere?
What category is Philosophy of Truth?
    Thanks
  • Why was my first discussion removed?
Don’t worry. It was about objective truth and people being equal. I don’t know how to argue the details of that. Maybe I will be content in arguing for objective truth rather than subjective truth. Regards,
  • Why was my first discussion removed?
I’ve read the guidelines, maybe it was too short? 3 or 4 sentences. I would be worried about it mentioning Oxfam in title and post, thread in Ethics.
  • The Human Condition
Truth is what we’re missing. Objective truth I believe. Imagine yourself above the Universe looking down. You are in the nothing, looking at existence, and you see everything clearly.
