Depends on what they say about me in the bannings thread.
  • When is it rational to believe in the improbable?
Very informative. It's a shame that I don't have the math skills to fully appreciate probability. Perhaps when I begin college again I will learn more about probability theory.
  • When is it rational to believe in the improbable?
The very best I can do, without the facts, is split the differenceMww
Why couldn't we just not assign probability in that case? Leave it as an unknown probability.
  • When is it rational to believe in the improbable?
Sure we can; he is lying or he isn’t lying. No such thing as a partial lie. The probability is exactly .5.Mww
    Why .5?
  • When is it rational to believe in the improbable?
The probability that your friend won the the Powerball jackpot is 1 in 292,201,338.Wheatley
I suppose you can say that this isn't the relevant probability. The relevant probability is the probability that your friend won the jackpot given that he told you that he won.
  • When is it rational to believe in the improbable?
    Good.

It looks like I need a different example.

Suppose a friend messages you on Facebook that he just won the Powerball jackpot. The chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in 292,201,338. Do you believe him based on that message? Not sure if we can estimate the probability that your friend is lying, but let's just assume that your friend is not the type to joke like that.

The probability that your friend won the the Powerball jackpot is 1 in 292,201,338. The probability that your friend is lying is likewise is very slim. Either way, you have to choose to believe in something improbable, am I right?

    Edit: See this post.

Sounds like anxiety. I know you mentioned that you have another diagnosis in another thread. Hows coming to terms with it?Wallows
I've been diagnosed with schizophrenia by my old psychiatrist. New one just thinks I have anxiety and depression. My mood has been pretty stable for the past few months, I rarely feel any depression. I just signed up for a peer specialist and he's helping me. He even helped me readmit to community college for the spring semester.

For me, it ended up being on disability, and contrary to what other people might say, it's the easiest life possible, and I'd do it again, as now I get to indulge in exclusively all my interests online (posting and reading and interacting with other people on this forum being the primary one), haha.Wallows
My illness is disabling for me. But I remember doing well in college despite it, and I had some really good experiences, so I'm going to try it again (for the third time).

It is easy, no girlfriend or wife, no job, no responsibilities, free government assistance etc..

So, try and find something that negates the premise in your mind that philosophy isn't a good thing, because this cannot be so.Wallows
I think philosophy is great, I personally don't think it should be the sole focus of someone's life. Also, I'm not really addicted to philosophy, it's the forum I'm addicted to. I also have another online addiction (no, it's not porn). I found this website where you can create and upload memes. I'm just spending way too much time online, and it isn't fun constantly checking notifications, or checking if someone responded.

Addicted again. But now I'm trying to do other things. I'm currently watching Vox the mind explained on Netflix now. I'm watching an episode on anxiety and it's pretty interesting.

I think I think I'll be fine, thanks.

  • Is intelligence dependent on your concentration?
Because you have schizophrenia you’ll probably appreciate that you have difficulty focusing because you have numerous distractions affecting your ability to deal with ‘the everyday’ others do.I like sushi
Funny thing is I don't even know if I have schizophrenia. I've recently changed psychiatrists and the new psychiatrist has removed that diagnoses.

Effectively you’re juggling several different ‘mental’ items at once while most others are only trying to handle one or two at once.I like sushi
Yes, and some of those items are completely useless at the moment. For example, I often am extremely focused on the movement of the lips and the facial expression when I should really focus on what the person is actually saying! I can't help it, and it sometimes gets me into deep trouble. :fear:

The key difference is you have a higher load to deal with than most people.I like sushi
It's not only that, when I get stressed out my mind goes completely blank and I get stuck, which stresses me out even further. It's like vicious cycle.
  • Is intelligence dependent on your concentration?
Welcome to the Forum, Dora.
My boyfriend was also diagnosed with schizophrenia and he scored high on an IQ test, even though he has really bad concentration problems. He can't follow plots of movies and he has to re-read passages constantly when he is reading a book. He also needs to edit everything he writes for a long time.Dora
I don't know about my IQ, but your boyfriend sounds a lot like me.

So, I wouldn't say that there's a strong connection there. Besides, from what you are writing, it doesn't sound like you have any intellectual deficiencies.Dora
It is odd. I had many people, including professors, tell me that I am really bright, yet I can be a complete idiot sometimes.

It's interesting that you can score high on an IQ test yet have poor concentration. I would think you would need to be able to concentrate on the IQ questions in order to answer them properly.

Have you tried any supplements like Omega3, ginko, ginseng... that could improve concentration? Or do you feel more focused when you rest more or are less stressed? Or is it always the same?Dora
I haven't really tried those supplements. Do they work?

My anxiety or stress can definitely affect my ability to concentrate. I have my usual poor concentration, but when I get really stressed out my mind goes completely blank.

I wonder what it feels like to not be able to follow a plot of the movie; my boyfriend looks like he's following, then it turns out he has no idea what is going on.Dora
It's not a good feeling. I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of things because of my problems concentrating. I get little to no enjoyment out of movie or TV shows, sometimes I even feel worse watching.

I think his mind can be very active and creative and he has many associations so he is constantly getting distracted. Everything reminds him of something else, so his trains of thoughts are very fast and branch out in all directions.Dora
I have the same thing. I used to think that it made me all special and creative that I see the world a little differently than everybody else, but now I don't think it's like an amazing gift. (I can't speak for your boyfriend.)

  • What are your favorite video games?
I love big, sprawling sandbox games where you can spend a lot of time being entertained by just experimenting/dicking around to see what various things will do. But also because I like the long, convoluted stories, the characters, etc.Terrapin Station
I'm exactly the opposite. I always get overwhelmed by the endless variety of options in the sandbox genre of games. I like structure and linearity where the game tells me what to do. I can't stomach games like Minecraft and Super Mario Maker. Also, with a few exceptions, I never really cared much for story telling in video games.

Huge fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, the Saints Row series, the two recent Red Dead games (and the zombie offshoot), etc.Terrapin Station
I played a bit of all that was mentioned. I feel like there's too much going on these games. My brain can't handle all the overloaded information.
  • What can logic do without information?
Imagine you are born as adult, fully intelligent, in a completely empty universe.Zelebg
I can't really imagine that. Perhaps you should ask someone who's entered a sensory deprivation chamber because that's the closest you can get to being conscious in an empty universe.

What does it even mean to be intelligent without having no any information about anything?Zelebg
I don't think there can be an intelligent being who literally doesn't know anything.

Or do we get born with some kind of basic information with which we could then derive some basic concepts and eventually geometry and math?Zelebg
It's an old philosophical problem. Some philosophers believe we are born with a blank slate. I'm thinking of empiricists such as Locke and Hume.

That's isn't even the biggest problem. It's not just the retention rate of active members that is low, about ninety percent of the members here were never active in the first place.

  • Monty Hall Problem - random variation
Doesn't "initial probability" mean irrespective of all later factors? In which case I don't see how it could be anything but 1/3.Echarmion
Not in this case because the program can loop.
  • Monty Hall Problem - random variation
I don't think the initial probability of picking a car at a random door is 1/3. Think about it. Consider you pick door 1, there are 3 possibilities:

Door 1 has the car. Program doesn't restart.

Door 1 has a goat, Program opens door 2, and it's a goat. Program doesn't restart.

Door 1 has a goat, Program opens door 3, and it's the car. Program restarts.

So 1/2 times you pick the goat in the door you choose, the computer invalidates that decision, and restarts. It's like you are given an extra chance.

The issue isn't the foreknowledge of the host, but of the knowledge of the contestant as revealed by the host.Hanover
I'm not saying this is incorrect, but some people try to explain the Monty Hall problem in terms of what the host knows and has to reveal.
