In the worst case of censorship ever in the US back then, all scientific stuff of psychologist Wilhelm Reich was burned in a garbage container in New York in 1957. How low can you get? Reichenbach was sent to prison for contempt of court. But for his original conviction no rational grounds are to be discovered.

His organon energy was at forehand considered nonsense. Maybe because it derived from orgasm. A delicate subject in those days, to say the least. He made orgone accumulators and constructed a vast experimental setup. Organon. Kate Bush sang a song about him and his cloudbusters. These things actually worked, hough Im off course not sure about this. I saw a film where a farmer said that after long drought the device was used and that evening it started to rain.

All his experimental stuff was destroyed and all his books were burned in that incinerator. Banned. Reich wrote a fascinating book in which he analyzed fascism and Nazism (for which he fleed from Austria). Hitler didn't let go his sexual energy (now why would that be...), with the result a blockage inside which gave rise to his tyrant aspirations, directing his anger energy (fed by blocked sexual energies) to jews.

Why was Reich sent to jail? Where he died 7 months later. Was it pure irrationality that took hold of people? Was there a well grounded reason? Or what?

In my humble opinion, this is a case of extreme ad hominem. Wilhelm Reich, RIP, whoever the hell he was was disliked for who (he was) and they, whoever they were, took out their anger on what (he did). Perhaps the world would've been a better place only if "they" had heeded an old piece of advice of proven value - don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. That's being optimistic of course. What if his ideas were highly toxic and could've either kicked off or given a boost to armageddon? :joke:

It's a curious story. If you read The Mass Psychology of Fascism, or his discussion of body armour, whereby trauma is stored in the body as tension and deformation and can be released by massage, he sounds insightful and quite modern in highlighting the connection of psyche on the one side to the social, and on the other to the body.

Other aspects of his career do seem more like a cult leader with paranoid schizophrenia. If any one wanted to, and more than a couple have, it is not difficult to replicate his experiments with orgone energy, but his results are more difficult to replicate, and so I am very sceptical ...

He was badly treated because he was a sexual liberal, anti-authority, communist, and loud-mouthed trouble-maker. But also a genius, and still worth reading for his psychological insights.

This is very true. I listebed to his regitered musings. He saw the enemy everywhere. But maybe rightly.
