    But we can talk about what qualities a thing must have for it to be a human or a tree. So we should be able to talk about what qualities a thing must have for it to be good (assuming that your comparison is apt).

    That's what people mean when they talk about a reason for things being good. We say that this thing is a human because it has this kind of DNA or this kind of biology. So we should be able to say that this thing is good because it has these kind of features.
