The sun isn't up but I have been up for hours. I have yet to get any response to my getting out of town after this weekend from either NicK or my Mother In Law and since by nature I am a person who believes in asking for permission rather than asking for forgiveness, I remain in limbo. Having said that NicK believes in asking for forgiveness, rather than permission.
What I am trying to say, is that I NEED someone to GIVE me permission, to get the flock outta town but only an hour away. I will be taking the Casino bus that happens to run the same route, $10 bucks for a ride both ways and $25 in Casino credit for me to gamble with.

I am not sure I should be doing this, but as long as Nick keeps his guns in the holsters I say go for it. X-)

Yippeee! I am heading North tomorrow morning! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!! I need to immerse myself in the forest for a long time to wring out the stress of these past three weeks. My girlfriend has her fist Christmas tree up at their new cabin so I need to find the perfect ornament to bring as cabin warmer tomorrow. Oh and I looked at the Casino Shuttle pick up yesterday and it looks like I will be the youngest human on board so wish me a safe ride and I'll use a few of my betting dollars on "your" pull. Who knows? We might win a boatload of money! There is always a chance.... (Y)

And any way you are helping the economy to grow by spending your money. Service sector jobs are important!

That's wrong. The economy doesn't grow because of consumption, it grows because of production. Consumption is destructive of the value that is created actually. So only if that money goes towards a productive activity that creates value, only then does the economy grow.

I'm pretty sure that Tiff won't be using money that is debt, but that her hard earned savings. (Or I assume that is the case)

A job in the service sector does grow the economy just like a job in a factory. If Tiff helps people be employed by casinos, that's great.

:s - a job that doesn't produce anything useful, but merely involves consumption of goods that others produce isn't useful to the economy. Quite the contrary - take a job in financial speculation on Wall Street for instance.

There is a false idea going around that spending and consumption are key to the growth of the economy. More than anything, that's a manipulation of the stupid public to encourage consumerism so that at least some of the people who produce useful things can get that money. It would be better if instead of consumption, those people invested part of that money in production.

Sorry, but you don't make sense.

Invest in what production? To whom is something produced? Spending and consumption are just the other side of the coin to production. As if production itself wouldn't be the essential part of consumerism. And if you produce a service that others want, well what on Earth is so bad about it compared to some manufactured gadget?

Fact: the biggest proportion of World GDP is made by the service sector. In every Western country the Service sector is the largest when measured by GDP (and likely By any indicator). In the US the Service Sector makes nearly 80% of the GDP. The smallest service sectors you find in poor Third World countries and Saudi-Arabia, which basically is totally financed by oil production.

Even though Arizona is known for it's 5 C's cattle, climate, cotton, copper and citrus, I would suggest that the biggest generator of revenue is tourism. Arizona is a year round destination and our hospitality and tourism industry is HUGE. We VERY much depend on people from around the world wanting to come to Arizona and spend their money lavishly on themselves. There are very few states in December that you can snow ski and water ski all in the same day. The older population (usually the well to do) come out for the weather and stay because of the lower cost of living and the amazing medical facilities. Whether a snowbird or a transplant, we depend on their consumption to survive and thrive.

That is production, why does it matter that you produce a service or a manufactured gadget? Cleaning services, etc. have practical and productive effects in society. Financial speculation, gambling, etc.? Not so much.

What happens if you grow consumption too much is that your economy actually shrinks. Consumption grows, supposing Investments remain the same, government spending remains the same, then your trade balance will decrease. Growth in consumption without simultaneous growth in production is actually harmful. Why do you think the USA has a negative trade balance with China for example, of around $300 billion?

So consumption grows by $10 dollars, if your government spending remains the same, and your investments remain the same, then where is that consumption going? Towards imports, of course. That's a financial weakness, not a strength. Read, for example, something like this.

I was correcting a general assumption that people make, namely that spending is good for the economy or virtuous. That's not necessarily true. How this is applied to your own particular situation I do not know, because I haven't thought about your case in detail.

On my way back to the ranch. Pine trees, Pecan trees, horses and a beautiful person to spend a couple of days unwinding with. Waiting for me at the ranch is Nick, my puppies and my Mother in law. Monday will make it 4 weeks she has been in her Van down by the river. The time for a change in location is overdue. I need the seasons back in my life. (L)
