    Why?

The racket the Camaro makes when I pull into the Piggly Wiggly from running on 7 cylinders is such an embarrassment.Hanover

Especially as it is the six cylinder model.

    Rule 4.1
He who talks a lot, has many posts without rules contained there in, has to post a rule for each of the posts that poster made that does not contain a rule.

    Rule 4.2
The Lord of the Game has the power to authorize any further venality he see fit for those posters that talk too much as defined in Rule 4.1. Including himself.

I've already told you that you can't post in this thread! This is an Agu free zone! So shoo! :PLone Wolf

That seems to be a trump style discriminatory statement. Are you some kind of "ist", racist, sexist, aguist? :-O

Do you know much else about him, about the coal gas company itself, his role, influence or was everything thrown on you when your father was unwell?TimeLine

A distant cousin of my fathers has dug up most of the family history as far back as about 1700. He has a local Yorkshire bigwig and politician. He was even the mayor in the city for a while.

There is more about the machine here http://www.south-tynedale-railway.org.uk/locomotives-stock/

And why do you need to be rich?TimeLine

Traveling is expensive and I do not want to go back to England without having plenty of money to spend. That probably means I will never get to see it.
  • Beautiful Things

He was the big boss in the coal gas company it was made for, so the named it after him. I only found out about it just before my dad died so there is not much I know about it except what is on line. When I get rich I might go take a ride on it.

if "Crucification" is not a word, what is it?Banno

It is a group of letters that someone put together to provide a topic for discussion.
  • A game with curious implications...
    Rule number whatever.

Discussion at any time must fall into the "about the validity of a rule" category.

    Rule number whatever + 1.

Discussion of all rules of a political nature are forbidden.
  • A game with curious implications...
I had puzzled at the quantity of directly religious moral threads on this forum. Is that a result of the change in clientele, or of changing times?Banno

The need for guidance maybe, Inferiority complex, laziness. Who knows.

  • What if good leaders become evil intentionally?

Actual I didn't, I think it was Tsu Sun. But I have not read things like that for decades. Just placed it on my reading list, #456.

A dictator allows no one to disobey him and there is no questioning of his orders, as long as those orders were beneficial to the people there should be no problems.
  • How does language relate to thought?
We are designed to acquire and use languageBitter Crank

While I agree with most of what you have said, could you clarify who did the designing?
  • Exiting Wormhole Prematurely
Thanks to you and Bitter Crank for helping us choose between two hypothetical and, as far as we know, impossible technologies.T Clark

But there is also dimensional crossover to discuss. This is were you jump from a place in this dimension through a shortcut in another dimension and end up at your destination. This has the advantage of not having to use spaceships because you just sort of have to step sideways through the portal into the other dimension and out the other side without actually moving much. If you somehow managed to misstep in the other dimension I guess that you would be in the same situation of not knowing where you were.
  • What if good leaders become evil intentionally?
would it better humanity to be an oppressive leader?Starthrower

The best leader is a beneficial dictator.
  • Exiting Wormhole Prematurely
This has been resolved in science fiction stories. If memory serves, exiting a worm hole before you reach the opposite end results in death, so it won't matter to you.Bitter Crank

That is one of the advantages of warping space to travel, if you come out of the warp accidental you can still live to find out where you are.
  • Exiting Wormhole Prematurely
Show me a map of your wormhole system so I can work it out for you. X-)
  • A game with curious implications...
    Rule three:

No rule shall be considered valid until it has been published in a confirmation post by Lord of the Game, Sir Banno.
Any rule posted before aforementioned confirmation of previous post will be cancelled and considered null and void.
  • A game with curious implications...
I had such high hopes for Fred as Supreme Leader, but he just drank the toilet water and started chewing on the wall, so I'm not sure he's the intellectual I thought he was.Hanover

He sounds as though he is on the same level as some world leaders, don't give up on him yet.
  • Why we should feel guilty
We white people should feel guilty because we are the beneficiaries of racial privilege. We white people have more power, more stuff, and more resources, and nicer lives than people of color have. Not only do we have a nicer life than people of color, but we would prefer that it stay that way.Bitter Crank

Maybe I am living in the wrong place at the wrong time.I don't have more stuff than people of color. And I certainly hope that those that have less than me, whatever their color, on day can have as much as me. Just like I wish I had as much as those rich people do. I don't prefer that thing stay the way they are.

If you don't feel guilty about being a rich white male, or his fortunate wife, how did you manage to solve your guilt problem?Bitter Crank

I don't feel guilty about being about being a rich white male, because I am not one. So I don't have a problem to solve.
  • Why should you feel guilty?
Since god is the creator of all; omnipresent, omniscient, then every thing that happens is the will of god.charleton

But supposedly, according to the OP, we can "resist sin". So he must think it exists.
Personally I don't think sin exists either. We just manage to fuck things up sometimes.
  • Why should you feel guilty?
This is a contradiction of the definition of the Classical God; so self refuting.charleton

    How so?
  • Why should you feel guilty?
Sin does not exist, and so there are no consequences to it.charleton

Sin - An act that is regarded by theologians as a transgression of God's will.

Without god there is no sin, only things that one should probably not do. To which there are consequences.
  • God cannot decide
    God cannot decidebahman

Either that or he does not exist. X-)
  • The Tree
I'd never use the bible for moral guidance, as there are so many more relevant books available. Even though there might be some good advice in the Bible I could never condone any book that supports genocide and the stoning of adulteresses.charleton

That makes at least two of us. (Y)
  • The Tree
And yet... The Bible is a book almost exclusively designed to elucidate God's intent and to exhort his followers to act accordingly.charleton

I think the key word there is designed. The whole original books of writing have been combined, changed, edited and altered to suit the people that want to use it to control others.
How does a book full of stories, some true, some still unproven and some that are obviously fiction, need the guidance of a god to write?
Many books that have been written contain basically the same content, family histories, mystery, romance, sci-fi. And many of them contain advice and guidance on how to live a good life and give examples of what happens when you do not follow the rules.

  • The Tree
But the Bible says that God's ways are mysterious so there is no reliable way to determine his intent.Abdul

You answered your own question, we cannot know why god does things.
  • Why should you feel guilty?
It is always beyond our strength when we sin or do something wrong.bahman

If we have free will we can decide to do something or not. If we decide to do something knowing that it is a sin then we should be prepared to suffer the consequences.
If we don't have free will then as the saying goes "Shit happens"
