Do countries not share our look at each others data or something? The US has just ok'ed convalescent plasma as a treatment. I think it's almost 2 months ago (edit: July 6) that this has proved to be so-so in the Netherlands because sick people make the antibodies anyway so injecting more of them via plasma doesn't improve recovery.
  • Marx and the Serious Question of Private Property
That's really funny, David. What do we call people who want a whole group of other people to disappear and then make statements like:ssu

Marx wanted class distinction to disappear by adjusting social and economic rules in such a way everyone becomes part of the same class.

Also Marx wrote plenty about farmers actually. Even believing, towards the end of his life, that a communist revolution would me more likely in an agrarian society.
  • Leftist chess game: 4 more years of Trump... OR... 8+ years of Biden/Harris
The basic problem is that Americans believe as if a God-like President would somehow descend into the White House and somehow create change with everything else in the representative system being in control with the two corrupt parties.

It won't work. Never will. But every Presidential candidate will surely say that they, as President, will surely change things!

I don't know where voting based on plurality is decided but if one thing needs to go, that's it.
  • Kamala Harris
Maybe because the point was already made rather clearly in this thread.

anyone who delves into the debate of whether she is or is not black enough seems to be conceding that her blackness matters. It shouldn't.Hanover
  • Marx and the Serious Question of Private Property
That's exactly what he argued for countries that he considered to have strong democratic institutions such as the UK and the Netherlands.
  • Marx and the Serious Question of Private Property
Yet democracy was only a tool for the proletariat, to get power. Others classes have to fall under the lead of the proletariat. This shows clearly how Marx isn't at all a democrat or believes in democracy. Marx or his followers do not believe that (liberal) democracy could be self correcting and fix many of the injustices. Neither was it acceptable to be a socialist who attempts to work within the system.ssu

I think Marx was basically a Democrat as the whole idea was to gain political power through democratic means (or other means in non-democratic countries) to then push through rules that would put an end to class struggle by effectively abolishing class distinction. Once everyone is in the same class, democracy logically followed as both economic and political power would be vested in the same people and the democratic would no longer be marred by class struggle.

Communism was about the enfranchisement of everyone.

Counterrevolution deaths are attributable to Marx too because he started it!
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
I remember them but I was in high school when it was Bush Sr. Not at an age to care. I was under the impression the first Iraqi war was great, which, as I learned later, only started out pretty great (as far as wars go).
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
Not really. They could've installed a slug or Hillary last time and you'd pretty much would be in the same place as you are now. Or do you think those interests wanting everything to open up would've magically not existed with Hillary? The idea "if only it weren't Trump" totally denies how the two party system operates.
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
The only ignorance on display is the American centric view. Regardless of the party in power the likelihood of laws being passed that has a near 100% majority of support among people is only 30%. Which is the same likelihood of a law being passed that nobody wants. At least when you're talking about the bottom 90% of earners.

The top 10% can block legislation they don't want effectively and have more than double the likelihood of having laws passed they do want.

This is the same regardless of which party is in power. So you can take your belligerent tone elsewhere and maybe learn something from people who don't have a horse in the US race and therefore see the system for what it is. An oligarchy.

But you know this of course because you've actually read the Princeton study proving it instead of just being American and eligible to vote thinking that makes you qualified to have an informed opinion on the matter.

More elitism is totally what this world needs.
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
Only an American will insist on there being a meaningful difference. You don't understand what it is to have an actual democracy.
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
Degenerate ratfuck sounds about right though. No need to defend Biden here. As long as I've been aware of US politics - since Bill Clinton - the US hadn't had a decent President. US politics is too beholden to special interests to produce politicians in electable positions that are good for the whole country. The upside is that more and more Americans seem to realise it the downside is that it produces - for US sensibilities - two polarised views: social democracy similar to Nordic Europe on the one hand and individualism, laissez fair capitalism and minimal government on the other.

Funny how people talk about other people without realizing that they are a person too. Mods are people too. Isn't that a conflict of interest for a mod?Harry Hindu

I'm sorry to hear you experience disassociation so often that you think other people have problems with it too.
  • The Unraveling of America
They all think they are moral ubermensch capable of lifting themselves up by their bootstrap regardless of whatever circumstances they find themselves in. At the same time foreigners are to blame because "dey touk our jabs!", liberals are to blame for every social ill and meanwhile they're totally blind to the fact its society and its welfare components that create the choices and freedom to choose among them instead of having to spend all our time just surviving.

I'm not saying I have a different opinion from you, I'm saying you have a stupid metric.
  • Kamala Harris
Your metric, as an American, is that two other countries signed a peace treaty formalising how their relation has been for years? Maybe you should get your priorities straight and look closer to home.
  • The Unraveling of America
The unraveling of America is apparent in the fact y'all cannot stay on subject. Jesus.
  • Kamala Harris
But is she as phony as Trump? Less likely to vote for Biden means no votes or a vote for Trump?
  • Donald Trump (All General Trump Conversations Here)
It's official, the US is a banana republic.
  • Kamala Harris
If someone in the Democratic party predicted that and chose Harris because of that, it would be pretty bloody smart.
  • Kamala Harris
After reading your summary I think she's a bad pick. I was partial to Tammy Duckworth.
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
Maybe you're overestimating the ability of white people to adjust to a society in which black people are actively included in decision making processes. If I just look at my own country, about 30% of people have a non-western ethnicity in our major cities. This is what the group of people leading Amsterdam look like:

    191119-amstel1-college_b_w19-ftf0106-banner2.jpg

The black-haired lady was born in Morocco. But there are more black people in Amsterdam than Morrocans. So that's pretty weird.

I think the idea of voting for a black person, regardless of policy, is experienced by many white people as progressive in itself.
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
Cynically interpreted, does this mean that her being black is all the progessiveness the old Democrats can manage?

  • Donald Trump (All General Trump Conversations Here)
I haven't reviewed all 1792 cases. Have you? I find plenty of problems with the few things Trump had done in this field. Even so, even if Obama was worse (which he wasn't), that - once again - doesn't excuse Trump.

It's pretty annoying really that this specific fallacy keeps being repeated on a philosophy forum.
  • Donald Trump (All General Trump Conversations Here)

Wrong. He wasn't right. He was protected by Republicans in Congress.
  • Donald Trump (All General Trump Conversations Here)
Numbers are meaningless. It's about who and why. Obama mostly pardoned people who were convicted of drug crimes, already did substantial time and were sentenced during the war on drugs with mandatory minimum sentencing. Trump pardons Arpaio and his stooges.

Michael and I already explained the rules that apply in Oregon and what the difference is between detainment, arrest and kidnapping. It's clearly kidnapping if it's neither an arrest or detainment. Clearly fascist. And you're happy to side with him and excuse the worst.

As to cronyism, that others did it is not an argument in favour of it and you seem to misunderstand what it is ; the appointment of friends and associates to positions of authority, without proper regard to their qualifications.

Kudlow, Kushner and his team of failures on corona is killing us citizens. Herman Caine and Stephen Moore to the federal reserve. Really? Various ambassadors.

As to Barr denying having been asked. That might even be true; a good dog fetches the paper before the master asks. Even so, when a criminal goes out of his way to deny the crime, we are to believe him? It was highly irregular and fits the pattern we are to expect of cronies. While circumstantial, it is evidence of wrongdoing.
  • Donald Trump (All General Trump Conversations Here)
Nice cherry picking. I do mention three issues. Let's start with his multitude of lies and work our way up from there.

Cronyism and contempt for the law. Obstruction of justice, having Barr intervene with Flynn. Commuting Roger Stone's sentence. Appointing family members to governmental positions. Giving out government positions to wealthy donors.

Fascism. His suggestion to postpone the election, activating federal officers to kidnap us citizens, the Bible bullshit, his on the fence reaction to racist protests ending in violence, retweeting racist and xenophobic shit.

But yeah, head in the sand, nothing to see here.
  • Donald Trump (All General Trump Conversations Here)
He's grasping at straws because that story is old (2018), which, for instance, that "fake media rag" the wapo reported on. Leave it to NOS to elevate a single instance to a standard, while failing to see the pattern of fascistic thought, contempt for the law and cronyism of the Trump administration.

Der Spiegel has one bad article and is untrustworthy. Trump lies everyday and he's a hero. NOS is the worst type of fool or paid.
