  • Juneteenth as national holiday.
I asked chatGPT about percentage of freed slaves by date.

Jan 1, 1863 ~0–10% Legal freedom declared, but little enforcement yet

May 1865 ~82–88% War ended; Union control widespread

    Jun 19, 1865 ~90–95% Juneteenth — Texas enforcement

Dec 6, 1865 100% 13th Amendment ratified, slavery abolished nationwide

My biggest concern was that it was fmri research which isn't the highest res and often delayed data so that is kind of fuzzy on its own.

Lets assume no deities so no tricks.

I am not presupposing a heaven or hell. Those are primarily Christian beliefs. Not even a majority belief on earth.
  • Arguments for why an afterlife would be hidden?
    ↪180 Proof

Without seeing a theme and patterns in our own lives in reference to all of time we can't get a sense of why we're here and what we're building towards if anything other than to spread DNA around like Nick Canon. Lol. We may than have no real purpose. We only exist with the characteristics needed to live at this time (except maybe children that die before adulthood who didn't get that luxury). I think we need a much longer existence to get any real sense of why we exist.
  • Arguments for why an afterlife would be hidden?
    ↪180 Proof

I don't remember starting this conversation, but I think I was assuming an existence that doesn't interact with the physical world in a way we can detect. And I'm assuming we can't detect much if our thoughts on the origins of the universe shift a lot each time we get a new telescope resolution.

As far as things having real meaning I don't consider only now in which I can feel a sense of pride for what came before, but also the knowledge that any knowledge or perceptions during this life could be voided out upon death making any previous perceptual functions exist as little after as before, so what makes them important during. Without a clear purpose what can we know, and with our lifespans being virtually nothing compared to the duration of the universe how can we even determine themes and patterns.

What do you mean they are confident about their "location" "within"? Location within what?
  • Should people set a higher standard for others than they were able to have for themselves?
Perhaps children can learn well by understanding only the higher ideals that was taught from an imperfect teacher. I think there is a Bruce Lee quote about being a good teacher by in part restraining ones own worst self. But I guess I wonder if a teacher can be so imperfect that they can only see the final goal, but not really have the understanding to get someone else there? They would be too ignorant to know that a better teacher is needed?

I for one have had a few bosses that are incapable of doing the job they have me do.

    ↪Tom Storm

Yeah, I guess the sense of illusion. Perhaps like many kids I was intuitive when people were being less than honest but had no way to know how far the rabbit whole goes.
  • Probability Question
Well we certainly don't know if this teleporter machine has limits as the technology doesn't exist. But I assume essentially going to the same universe at random as the first person the odds are basically zero. Infinity being a concept and not a number I don't think any meaningful stats can be run.

Sounds like you describe a more Buddhists afterlife. No memories or feelings. Just karma essentially.

I wanted an MBA once. I had trouble with accounting. I was good at everything else including finance. Just not reformatting into standard accounting practices. Lol. I wish America had less debt. We'll never catch up.
  • What is the true nature of the self?
    ↪Truth Seeker

In Catholicism it is believed that a person isn't complete without their body fully restored at the end of days so technically in that view the soul on its own if it exists isn't the whole thing.

As far as the brain alone it has many thoughts and processes that can seem chaotic that needs to be focused in the same direction. Maybe that's the best definition of a self since we aren't simple robots that are perfectly linear?

Personally hope we do survive death mentally and get compensation for all the times our body failed us.lol.

I don't think most people travel that much in a given year. Vacations maybe.
  • Types of faith. What variations are there?
    ↪Tom Storm

Perhaps faith as opposed to confidence a person is more likely to put something at stake to represent the sentiment?

Like a person sky diving and trusting their god and religious beliefs with protect them. They literally put their life at risk. I suppose thrill is the main reason for sky diving so maybe an example more along the lines of joining the military is better.

Meanwhile confidence that isn't faith is making conclusion about the odds, but without really risking anything to make a point?
  • Types of faith. What variations are there?
So faith is absolute confidence? But confidence need not be absolute?

I understand confidence in plausible things happening, but religion asks people to have confidence in things that quite possibly never happened before.
  • Types of faith. What variations are there?
    ↪flannel jesus

Well, religion can just as easily involve trusting a story teller as a preacher. Science involves trusting people that can propose a way to verify what they're talking about independently.
  • Types of faith. What variations are there?
Is there an academic division between types of faith based on different criteria? I took philosophy of religion but other than the range between theism and atheism and types of miracles a table of types of faith wasn't really covered.

Infinity is more of a process of continuing than a quantity?
  • Is this image racist? I talked to someone who thought so.
    ↪Outlander

I can more easily imagine an African American being the main sayer of "ax" versus "ask", but "pacific" in place of "specific" seems broader to me. Like a person first learning the language as a child no matter ethnicity.
  • Is this image racist? I talked to someone who thought so.
    ↪AmadeusD

No catch. I have seen the same meme with a white guy in it. But the emphasis I would put on it is this black guy is the listener, not the speaker, and he is the one becoming more pacific. Also he's at a podium so I assumed he was a teacher. Possibly an English professor.

Just my local observation. I'm in Buffalo.
  • African Americans still wearing Covid-19 masks.

Well country matters because some countries had much better control than others. Italy screwed the pouch and New Zealand I recall did pretty well.

I'm in a northern state. What country are you from? When did the virus first particularly impact there? A new mutation there?

    ↪Vera Mont

What is expected of a person isn't always clear, and many people's duties are to do what needs to be done.
  • Above and beyond. Where does beyond start?
    ↪Nils Loc
Indeed. But people usually don't mention this border between the here and the beyond.

  • Coach Sean McDermott's 9/11 reference. Any justification?
    ↪L'éléphant
I don't know if Von has even contributed enough to justify his salary. I hope he's easy to let go of regardless of the outcome regarding the charges. I don't know why football players do bad stuff during bye weeks.
  • Coach Sean McDermott's 9/11 reference. Any justification?
    ↪L'éléphant
I'm sure the team will be fine. Just worried about the image of some individuals. Like Von Miller and the assault charges against him, etc.
  • Coach Sean McDermott's 9/11 reference. Any justification?
    ↪Vera Mont

Well the difference would be tactic. 9/11 was an attack on civilians. American forces are generally not considered terrorists.
  • Is supporting Israel versus Palestine conservative?
How about this. Is there any reason why the UN shouldn't gain exclusive control over the region and turning it basically into a state park for people to visit and appreciate the religious/historical sites? That way nobody that wants that land can have it claiming it belongs to their people? Fighting based on religion can't end, but if it isn't a home land to be gained it's just a nature preserve to be visited.
  • Forum focused on people of (non-western European) color?
    ↪Sir2u

I don't know the age, race, or gender of anyone here. I was kind of hoping there was a source for information on what a majority of people of different races want. I don't know anymore what can be seen as sexist or racist and I worry some more left leaning news networks only represent the more fringe of people. I'd like to know what most everyday people of different ethnic groups feel is needed in society. I worry if I don't specifically look for a group for minority groups I'll only get a bunch of white people.
  • Forum focused on people of (non-western European) color?

I think so. What does Destee mean?
  • Forum focused on people of (non-western European) color?
I assume there must be dedicated forums where minority groups discuss the issues that effect them particularly?
