Your view makes sense only if you reject God. You are free to reject what is right and good of course, but then you must accept the consequences. Good luck.

Your post begs the question: who is Glen Kirshner and why should anyone care what book is on his desk?
  • Greatest contribution of philosophy in last 100 years?
    ↪TiredThinker

I cannot think of any concrete contributions philosophy has made to our understanding of Creation/nature. It is interesting but not very useful. Only our faith in the Creator offers us any real hope for the world. IMHO.

Nothing to rethink, brother. Socialism is our only hope. We must unite.

If we could rid the world of capitalism we would achieve 90% of what you are asking for, IMHO.

I suffered as you did until I stopped turning away from God. It is vanity and arrogance (that you can be anything without God) that is your problem. In my opinion. Good luck and God bless.
  • To what degree is religion philosophy?
    ↪TiredThinker

First you should define philosophy. As way to live and make sense of the world I think think religion, in particular Christianity, is the ultimate philosophy.

How could your finite mind truly grasp the infinite love of the Creator? Impossible.

I can formally manipulate 'infinity' mathematically all day long. But truly wrap my head around it? Impossible. Poor analogy, but still...

    ↪Ree Zen

I always find it sad (OK, and a bit funny) to see atheists contort themselves in an effort to deny the reality of the Creator. Atheism is an irrational worldview.

    Nothing personal, just an observation.

Multiverses..,total speculation. When there is even one piece of observational evidence,
I will take it seriously. Right now it seems to be an atheist's delusion, nothing more.

I pray that my country (US) will stop provoking Russia. I support the latter in the protest against NATO expansion (bullying).

I generally support Biden but his hawkishness is the one thing I worry about, though God bless him for finally extracting our country from Afghanistan.

It is a fantastic lifestyle/way to work. I have been doing it for the better part of two decades, so everyone like me is catching up. I respect those who have to actually go somewhere (and all that hassle entails) to earn a living. And pity them.
  • Joe Biden (+General Biden/Harris Administration)
    ↪0 thru 9

God Bless President Biden. We live in a very dark age and I think Biden is doing the best that can be done. The crumbling of an empire, which Biden happens to be overseeing a significant part of, is always a terrible thing for your average Joe (pun intended) to live through.

    Hold tight and praise God.
  • Why are there just two parties competing in political America?
    ↪Inplainsight

The answer is: that is how things turned out. The Founding Fathers did not have this in mind, though many of them feared it.
  • Where are we?
    ↪Echoes

Here the is situation in 2021. We know of a single universe (hello there, neighbor), of finite age. It has a history. Here we are. Neat!

That is all that we can shown to be true as I type this sentence.

If this turns out to he the WHOLE PICTURE then, obviously, the next question will be: how did our universe come into being?

Jesus the Christ is the best answer to date. In my opinion.
  • Can we live in doubt
    ↪Lea

There will always be mysteries but little doubt. For example the Trinity. It is beyond the comprehension of our finite minds - but that is OK. Faith and reason.

I too lament the lack of accountability. We should drag all of the military leaders before Congress (more than the sideshow already held), strip them of all of their medals, and fire them all with no pensions. The military strung us along in Vietnam and shame on us for not learning our lessons and letting them have their fun in Afghanistan.

I finally made time for Kierkegaard, something I have put off for so many years, don't know why...

'A Kierkegaard Anthology' edited by Robert Bretall

I am about 1/3 the way through the anthology, on Fear and Trembling now.

I just felt like popping in and saying WOW - that Dane was on to something! Any S.K. admirers here?

A depressing assessment of what is going on but one I can't find anything I disagree with. I would add that a serious consequence of the trends you highlight is the increase in the rate of alienation from nature of younger people, many if not most seem to be suffering from technology addiction.
  • Why do people need religious beliefs and ideas?
    ↪javi2541997

Hello. Yes interesting point regarding Descartes though from what I know (not enough, surely) of his writings leads me to think he and I would have some disagreements in these areas. Hah. But yes, I do not want to get off topic.
  • Solutions for Overpopulation
In my opinion, the problem is not so much the number of people but rather how our resources are utilized. Capitalism is the problem. Unfortunately it will be impossible to kill it off before we destroy the biosphere so...

I guess I am not answering your question. Well, more educational opportunities for women has been shown to lower the birth rate in poorer countries.

I think the mystery of existence necessarily points to something beyond our everyday experience. That is, recognizing the existence of God is the rational inference from our being here, in my opinion.

In regards to that important book on religion by James, it is the edited transcript from his Gifford Lectures. Many of these have, over the years, been published. This includes lectures by Carl Sagan, Werner Heisenberg, among many others. The Gifford Lectures are on natural theology.

I am as concerned about the extinction of the majority of flora and fauna species going extinct as I am humans going that route. But ultimately the problem is not with particular technologies but rather how they are used. The real problem - on almost every level - is, in my opinion, Capitalism.
  • To what extent is the universe infinite?
IMO, an infinite value for any physical quantity should raise some red flags. As for black holes, the infinities we get are surely just a sign that our physics is breaking down at such high energies.

A few years ago a researcher at UNC showed, theoretically, that in fact singularities do not form; the final collapse is halted as a new form of matter is produced. As far as I know (and I have been on the lookout for any such news) the result has held up.

  • In Defense of Modernity
Modern medicine is obviously good. Internet? Sure...but then there is social media which, IMHO, is destroying the fabric of society.

However, unlike in the past, today we have much significant problems - existential threas such and mass specie extinction, climate change, etc. - of an order of significance not even dreamed of by our ancestors.

As with most things there are pros and cons. But the way I see it all the cons are destroying the biosphere, making the pros a mute point in the long run.
