    How is individuality expressed?

Looking back at the counterculture revolution in the United States, individuality was expressed in ways that would be unorthodox by modern day standards. Taking recreational drugs, professing peace and love, and vocally denouncing wars aren't things the youth in modern America do nowadays. Others might even claim that individualism has been commodified by purchasing goods that profess on a superficial level who we are. Such purchases can be seen in products like Apple or Tesla, as (in some cases) are virtue signaling.

I request to the reader to suggest a more grounded way of professing or expressing one's individuality.

Not voting in political election and not caring about what is going on around him. An individual person is not part of the society. I think it isn't depends on "counter-culture". This is just a different generation in a distinctive era. Back then, there were also individualism.
If you look to Asia, you will see a lot of individualism towards politics and international issues.
