  • Does philosophy cease to exist if a catastrophic event occurs?
I don't see how there isn't an extension of thought/intellect/intelligence in a building designed by an architect.Anaxagoras

A building is the results of his thought process, his thoughts do not continue into the building.

Depends on which humans survive. If a catastrophe happens and people like the Sentinelese survive I doubt we will see technology of our kind again.Anaxagoras

Someone beat me to the answer.

Why? 10,000 years ago we were all like the Sentinelese. And yet here we are now.Michael

    How may I help you?
  • Does philosophy cease to exist if a catastrophic event occurs?
Technology is an extension of man's thought. You destroy that you destroy every trace of man's genius. Again, we are talking about a catastrophe.Anaxagoras

Technology is the result of man's intelligence/intellect, not an extension of it. Man created the technology from nothing and if humanity one day ends up with no technology then it will start all over again.

  • Invasion of Privacy
I want to now ask anyone interested in this topic to share the ethical implications you feel having this done to a someone undermines as a private citizen who has Human Rights.

I'm more referring to "vigilante" private citizens. A formed group composed of those whom are technologically proficient and whom may have the resources necessary to hack someone. Their motivation may be to "karmically" punish someone for interests found to be reprehensible and suspect. Invading such an individual's privacy systematically (phone camera, audio, geo-location, online activities, accounts, etc.) being their method of obtaining intimate details. They may then weaponize the information they've gleaned against such an individual.Even though this is considered very unlikely, it's not altogether implausible.
    THX1138

As you and others have stated, there are hackers getting information from all kinds of websites and even websites that are set up for the purpose of obtaining information about people then disappearing. Banks have been known to share information about you spending habits. Interactive devices that sit around your house, even your cellphone listens to you. Cameras, public and private follow you around watching what you are doing. You are being monitored, most people that live in even small towns are. You cannot escape it unless you move to the woods.

Is it morally correct to monitor people? That would depend on what was done with the information gained from doing so. Murderers and other criminal have been caught, traffic problems have been prevented from becoming dangerous to motorists, people are being provided with better services when shopping and many other examples of benign use can be shown.

But if the information being garnered was to be used for targeting individuals for financial gain or even for screwing people's lives up just for fun, then that is highly immoral.

  • The environmental situation
It's a bit rich to insist on a detailed project plan at this stage...Banno

Not really insisting, more like asking if he has any new ideas that are maybe not as well known as those we see in the news papers everyday.
Basically the post is a summary of what most reasonably informed people know already, but they known for years and very little is being done to fix any of the problems.

Supermarkets now want to sell/fine you for using plastic bags, but half of the products you buy are wrapped in one use plastic. And the common person does not give a shit about it.
Not many want to give up their cars and take the bus or the train and it would cause havoc the day even 20% percent of them did actually try.
There are too many people in the world and they are living longer but no one can stop people from having kids. China tried and look what happened to them.
There is not enough food to feed all of the people in some places, but tons of food are thrown away everyday in other places.

Up until now I have heard lots of people saying that something needs to be done, but I have not heard of really feasible plans to do it.

Whether absurdities are necessary or not I gave up trying to figure out a long time ago. In today's world it is sometimes even difficult to decide if somethings are absurd or not. I start doubting if one still has the ability to distinguish it from the norm. :gasp:
  • Does philosophy cease to exist if a catastrophic event occurs?
Philosophy doesn't require technology, and technology hasn't advanced philosophy, it's made it less useful. What would a "knowledge and technology catastrophe" look like?whollyrolling

As you stated, it has already happened. Civilizations have been wiped out with all of there knowledge by barbarian hordes that destroy everything in their path including libraries that contain centuries of information. But the survivors sometimes have started again with the little that was left.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_destroyed_libraries
  • Does philosophy cease to exist if a catastrophic event occurs?
No it hasn't. I'm talking about a catastrophe with all of our knowledge, and technology as we have today because it is from technology that we have advanced much in philosophical knowledge regarding the world.Anaxagoras

We have advanced in scientific knowledge but I don't think philosophy has come too far in the last few thousand years. There are new ideas, and as always their respective opposing arguments. There are new perspectives, some of which have come about through technology, but technology and science are separate entities. Whilst they work hand in hand to confound the two is a mistake.
Philosophy and the history of philosophy are two different things, the first is not 100% dependent on the second.
Technology and the history of technology cannot be separated the first is based 100% on the second.

  • Does philosophy cease to exist if a catastrophic event occurs?
Right but the inquiries that we all seek and share here will be lost.Anaxagoras

We are doing almost the same today as they have done for the last few thousand years, anywhere language exists they will continue to discuss the same topics.

The contemplative "does God exist" or "I think therefore I am" will too, be lost in the rubble of human civilization.Anaxagoras

Maybe it will change to "Why did god do this to us?". Or "I am therefore I must think to survive".

True, it would be a different type of wisdom but it would seem that the investigative inquiries and all of the historical elements that make up modern philosophical thought will be all lost.Anaxagoras

There would be a great deal of loss of knowledge maybe, but humans will still have to eventually ponder the answers to the same questions. It might take a couple of hundred years or even a couple of thousand but philosophy will always be a part of humanity. Maybe they will come up with better, more intelligent answers than we have.

Any world changing event that leaves even small groups of humans will still not wipe out all of technology. Finding out how to make it work again will be the biggest problem they will face, and no I do not mean the internet or even electricity, I mean food production.
  • Does philosophy cease to exist if a catastrophic event occurs?
    but will philosophy remain?Anaxagoras

Yes, people will always love wisdom.

It might be a different type of wisdom though.

Introduce your friend to S. S knows all about dealing with obnoxious people.
Start walking around in one of those bright green or yellow t-shirts with his picture on the front and back and bright text that says "Property of Florida State Mental Health Detainment Center". That should make him think twice about hanging out with you.

  • Is the "Golden Rule" still applicable today?
    Depends if harm is involved.Anaxagoras

Sorry, I reread and edited something.

Surely sadists of the extreme kind tend to gravitate towards others of like mind.Anaxagoras

I would not know much about that, but a lot of the murders you see on TV are pretty gruesome. If people were obliged to not do unto others what they would not like having done to them it might make them think before doing bad things.
An eye for an eye seems very appropriate in some cases.

How do you relate the original with someone that has extreme sadistic/masochistic tendencies?

Surely it would perpetuate the behavior of one sick son of a bitch and hurt a lot of poor victims.

I always thought that this was badly written. It would make much more sense if it said,

"Don't do to others things that you don't want them to do to you".

Stated thus it would be applicable anywhere at any time.

  • What is the proper definition of “invention”?
Invention is defined as something crafted by humans.Blackhole94

No it is not, that is only part of the meaning. Bread was an invention, arrived at through experiments. Peeling bananas is an action, and it is doubtful there was an inventor.

Invent: Come up with (an idea, plan, explanation, theory, or principle) after a mental effort

Invention: A creation (a new device or process) resulting from study and experimentation
  • What is the proper definition of “invention”?
Basically, I’m looking for a proper definition of “invent” that excludes things like peeling a bananaBlackhole94

Where did you even get the idea that peeling a banana could be said to be inventing.

Why don't you try telling us what the dictionary says and then tell us what is wrong with that definition.
