  • Do heroin addicts have free will?
There are thousands of examples you can create where your will is challenged. The heroin addict's will is tested minute by minute. Regardless, he has a free will.Hanover

Thank you for your deep understanding Hanover. I genuinely appreciate your empathy when it comes to understanding how absolutely touch and go it is for every man or woman, day after day, hour after hour.
My only saving grace when it comes to Opiate addiction is that I am afraid of needles and that is enough for me to leave my own dragon slayed with the pill form. The thing is: that dragon never dies and I am keenly aware of how fortunate I am to not have my addiction available to me in the way that an alcoholic must face their addiction everywhere they turn. From tradition to religious reasons, alcohol is a heavy thread in the makeup of the fabric of our country and I am doing everything in my power to make sure that is not the fate of the opiates/heroin phenomenon.

We put down new flooring in the master bedroom! Gorgeous! (pictures to come)
Moved onto the kids room.....a pile of dust in the corner....termites......
Termite dude came out, assessed damage to be old, treated for them, located a nest of bees and heard rats in the walls.....
Set traps....wasn't rats....was cutter bees....in the insulation of the wall......omfg
Ripped the wall out, took out the window, removed all damaged material, moved the window back in under the territorial lumber soffit, sealed it in, repaired the stucco on the outside, new insulation, sheet rock, wall mud, sanding, texturing, repainting and are about to finish the floor which is ALL we were supposed to be doing! Good God in Heaven! I am getting too old for this shit.
  • The end of the global internet
And so it will be safer for everyone to end up with the global Internet.Geo

Someone smarter than I will come along and say something much more profound but based upon the title of your thread and the quote above, you seem to have mixed feelings about the end of the internet.
I am surrounded by people in the tech industry and the thought of hitting the big "Reset" button of the Internets/inter webs is something we toss around quite frequently. There are some BIG benefits that would come out of the technology loss like jobs, skills and printing presses. There would be a need to consult the elderly because they are the ones with the knowledge rather than the extra brain we all carry around in our phone. People would feel needed and useful and that is something that technology has stolen from our seniors and when we are headed to the baby boomers retiring, we are going to need to restore our respect in those with knowledge.
It sounds somewhat peaceful but I would be heartbroken to lose all my friends I have made over the decades on the internet.

There's lessons to be learned from the Trump administration's failed tactics. They haven't been the sort of obvious, short term remedies that are done for treating gaping wounds - and they show that the wrong treatment can actually make the problem worse. There's not even agreement on what the problems ARE. For example, Trump would like to shut off all asylum seekers. An absence of a wall has not caused the current crisis.Relativist

The lessons that you speak of that can be learned from the Trump administration's failed tactics are?
Please be specific and as I try to remain as objective as I possibly can. Please speak on a community level rather than a national level because right now? The community, the meso level of society is who is being impacted by this influx. Nothing from the national level will solve the people who are now being essentially abandoned at Phoenix Greyhound bus station, Phoenix Sky Harbor airport, wherever there is a hope of transportation. If our ngo can come up with it, they take in the refugees off the street, treat their many times severe medical conditions and then purchase tickets for them to move further into the country to a 'family' member or a sponsor. If the ngo is unable to help or if the refugee decides on their own accord to depart until their court date which is currently 3 year out, where do they go? Our communities cannot nor should they be put in the position to have their lives overrun simply because our elected officials, ALL OF THEM, can get their heads out of the sand and recognize that we cannot handle it.

In a more perfect world, one with more statesmanship and less politics, a bipartisan group would be convened to identify the problems and their causes, and then develop fact-based policy recommendations that could be implemented while being monitored for efficacy. I'm skeptical that can happen here.Relativist
To which I say, we are not privileged to live in the "perfect world" that you speak of and circle back to the fact that we are in an "all hands on deck" position and we cannot maintain it forever. Something is going to have to give and I really find it hard to comprehend that I am the only one that can foresee the exacerbation that it is putting on my community.

Comprehensive immigration reform is absolutely necessary. However, if a person shows up at an Emergency room with a bleeding gash in their chest and a toothache, we have no legitimate choice. We have to treat the bleed in order for the person to survive and the toothache is addressed later.
That patient with the bleeding wound is at our doorstep waiting to be seen and we don't have the resources and they don't have a plan.
Everything cannot be Priority 1 and at this point I believe the human life is more important than finger pointing.
Many have suggestions, some nothing but criticism but I need solutions.
Agreed we need immigration reform for the long term toothache but tell me what you Triage strategy is because if we do nothing the results in my opinion will be tragic.
This is one situational I am not okay with "time will tell, it always does".

Beware of the alt-dark side, Tiff.ssu

ssu Thank you for the warning, I shall put it up against what is actually happening here in my backyard. I am not here to convince anyone anymore because I am summerialy dismissed, too often by people who I respect. There may come a time thinkers can believe without witnessing a situation themselves.
I am barely aware of the reality that my ebrother, Mayor, experienced in handling a surge of people wanting to move through Austria not too long ago. But what I can say and have ABSOLUTELY no control over is Mother Nature and the wicked heat that is on.
People who have walked through two countries to get to the USA are not strong enough to survive the elements. Hell most of us cannot handle the heat. At what point is what I am saying believable? When CNN says we have a problem at our border?
Or is it with broken heart that I ask if it is going to take proof of bodies from Katrina before the "right" people believe that the levy failed?
All I can say is when the reality and the gravity of what is actually happening in my back yard is acknowledged here, I hope it is not too late to recover.

I was thinking about the effect THC has on patients with severe Parkinson's disease. Studies have shown that they regain a lot of control over their muscles and movements after taking it. By my observations, it might be that Parkinson's disease disjoints the nerve signals so that the intention to move and the movement gets fractured and overlap. So after my observations, the separation of intention to move and the movement itself might be why patients with Parkinson's disease experience an improvement in movement, since the overlapping and disjointed nerve signals separate so far between intention and movement that it no longer overlaps as much as without it.Christoffer
Wow! Keep thinking Christoffer! If you wish you can read thru my mostly emotional posts in my history but let me just touch on a few things you are pondering and see what you think.
You are the first who I have seen focusing on the effects of the THC which because of the Reefer Madness bs has been summarily dismissed for the CBD and it's antinflamitory affects. The path you are on is the one less travelled, one which you are ahead of me on and that is impressive to me seeing as how long I have been on this pursuit measures in the decades. My Dad passed away last summer from complications of Parkinson's disease and as an advocate for Cannabis, I thought a lot about what I could have done for him had he lived in my state. 10+ years into his disease he was as sharp mentally as he ever was. I listened to him as he would tell me his struggles as he became confined to a nursing home. When we would eat, his shaking would be impacted to the degree that 10% of what he started with made it to his mouth. As a practicing Mormon, it was the best I could do to get him to drink caffeine to help control the tremors. Caffeine helped but made him "think" about the next in life and he didn't want to think more about the inevitable, which is when I stopped pushing the caffeine. But Cannabis...to have the fresh, never explored, Endocannabinoid receptor system already in place in the patient? I will be accused of seeing Cannabis as a panacea and at times I let it stifle my words but not in my actions.
As you look for the effects on Parkinson's, I am in active pursuit of the impact Cannabis can have not just treating the symptoms of Alzheimer's dis-ease but in using Cannabis profolactictly, to keep the plaque from ever forming.
Part of my theory is based on the idea that if someone is administered a concentrated dose of Cannabis within 48 hrs of an event that has a history of producing traumatic result, it can keep the nueropathways from holding onto the stress and has the potential to reduce the chances of PTS in soldiers and maybe onto the general population at some point.
Whether it is Parkinson's and the muscle memory I think you are speaking of which has been shown to be overcome with music that the patient knows the dance beat to with no shuffle or Parkinson's instability. My thought is that music crosses both sides of the brain barrier and muscles have enough memory within them, that somehow that connection is stable again.
Just before I go, when I talk about muscle memory, I use the analogy of a coiled garden hose. If you wrap the hose the right way, the way it knows, it coils easily. But when you try to reverse coil the hose, you are likely in for a fight to keep it from getting tangled up in it's efforts to return to it's original coil. That which you are fighting to reverse coil is similar to the 'memory' that muscles have and in a Parkinson's patient I wonder if you are onto something with Cannabis, specifically THC, and tapping into the muscle memory in the way music does.
Keep thinking Christoffer and keep posting your ideas for we are here, standing beside you, even if it doesn't always feel that way. The impact we have on one life at a time adds up but maybe more importantly is when we can help those we love most in life. :sparkle:

  • Why aren't there many female thinkers today?
In addition to what Waya said I think intelligent women, who find a fishing hole full of Big Mouth Bass, we aren't as quick to share it with other females. Quick witted, logic based, creative writing men that are willing to listen to what a woman has to say? Where?
    Here. But shhhhhhh!
I don't know about you or Waya but I can tell you the territorial instinct in me is a strong guide when I find a group of intellectual males. • Does “spirit” exist? If so, what is it?
And for those feeling adventurous, compare and contrast the idea of “spirit” with that of “soul”. Could a thing or animal be thought to have a spirit, if perhaps not a soul?0 thru 9

Dear professor, while my school hours are booked with compare and contrast papers, between Algebra and Crisis management, I am going to take a moment to address your pondering.

Yes, I absolutely believe that most humans have "spirit" and I don't mean Rah rah rah  I mean an essence of the person. It is the part of the person, that together with another's spirit can create a new combined energy or synergy for the ultra fortunate. Animals are no different in that most have spirits as well.

I use the word "most" as a prequalifier as there are always exceptions to any theory but that does not change my mind about whether or not a spirit exists.

Is there a difference between a spirit and a soul?
On first blush I would say they are almost one in the same but I don't feel comfortable making that differential just yet.

Okay, say that we all started subscribing to the WH rhetoric, built a giant impenetrable concrete and steel border wall from sea to shining sea, and somehow managed to block all illegal drugs, guns, and gang members from entering the country from Mexico. Drug problem solved? Gang problem solved? Gun problem solved? Crime solved?praxis

In my opinion that rhetoric you are speaking of above is only exacerbating the perception or in this case the misconception of the complexity at the border that we are really encountering. I, nor anyone who knows the geography of our Southern border would advocate for a "border wall from sea to shining sea" so please, I am trying my best not to feed into the rhetoric.

It would have an effect of course but you must realize how politicized these issues are. If we really cared about American drug abuse, gang violence, gun control!?, and crime in general, is this really the best approach to effectively address it?praxis

If you would be so kind to take an honest look at the link above, I think I might have a solution to the drug trap. I just ask, if you watch it to comment, if not then don't.
Both of the drugs coming across our border, Methamphetamine and Heroin (Opiate)are drugs I have been personally involved with and almost lost my life to both. There is a problem in our need/desire for the drugs and it no longer being able to be produced in backyard labs in the USA, as the crack down on the purchase of the ingredients was effective.

To your question of gang violence and guns? What little I do know is that if you are in the USA illegally, the chances of your reporting a crime are slim to none for you don't want a spotlight on your citizen status. When someone is here illegally, they cannot legally work. If you cannot find work and have no way to provide for your family here in the USA are you going to leave and head to Canada? How many will many have any choice other than to resort to crime out of desperation?

The threat of placing tariffs on Mexican car imports, a year from now without compliance with his demands, is weird but maybe works for him?praxis

A year from now? A year from now??? We don't have a big enough boat my friend. We are not going to make it a year at this rate without a preventable tragedy.
The right balance may have been to refocus CBP at the ports of entry and only allow commercial vehicles across the border, that way they can be properly inspected for the detection of drugs that are coming in and reduce the damage that will be done on the economic stability of both countries.
    But he didn't do that.

  • "be careful what you do; because the lie becomes the truth"
Why would a lie become the truth? Is it because the universe takes the lie to be true and the way it reacts to that position forces the statement in the lie to become real..? I don't know.wax

    wax!!!!!! from PF?
For what it is worth, I have a fair belief in that a 'lie' can become and often does become the truth. And yes, I think that to a degree the universe is at play here. Take for instance calling into work because you are "sick" when in reality you really are heading to Vegas for an extended weekend.
Do you actually become sick after the outing?
What does reality flesh out for you?

For me? I am better off saying I need a "personal" day than calling in "sick" because inevitably when I did call in sick, I GOT sick!
    Coincidence?
  • What is your gripe with Psychology/Psychiatry? -Ask the Clinical Psychologist
So, with all that being said, for those of you that have issues, what is the dang problem with our profession?Anaxagoras

The problem I have seen is the decrease in effectively listening to the person/patient AND the person/patient losing trust with their Doctor.

Too many times situational stress/depression are under considerded and revisiting getting off a treatment plan with medication is dismissed.

Keeping people/patients on medications for life may be appropriate for some, dare I even say a few but that is not necessary for all.

People/patients seek a solution, if it's in pill form, it's got to work! Doctors see (acknowledged or denied) solutions in pill form that the patient believes in more than themselves and we are off to the races. The lifelong race that has very few offramps, rarely suggested by the Doc to even entertain getting off the medications that once were appropriate but years later might not be necessary. But Doctors rarely seek to get their patients off of medications. Maybe you can say why that is.
