  • Why I don't drink
If you can drink vodka then the last thing you are allergic to is alcohol!Barry Etheridge
Well getting to 46 years old and understanding how alcohol interacts with my body and the Doctors understanding how it interacts, makes me want to take your word over our experience. :-} (I hope that is an eye roll) Hmmm...not likely. What I have figured out is, it is the impurities of the cheap Vodka or Tequila, which is why when I do have a drink it has to be top shelf (Cuervo 1800) mixed with a strong acidic juice.
Clearly you are allergic to the flavoring elements in these drinks, not the alcohol itself.Barry Etheridge
With the brandy it was the sugar mixed with the alcohol that put me in the ER but they didn't say I was allergic to sugar but rather alcohol.
And did you really just say that you think your child is 'fortunate' to have allergies? I wonder if he/she shares your enthusiasmBarry Etheridge
I did just say that and will again if you wish. My son does appreciate the fact that he can openly dismiss offers of something that makes him feel ill.
Is there something wrong with someone who does not drink?
  • Why I don't drink
I am allergic to almost all alcohol except Vodka and Tequila, which when I do consume (maybe one drink a year) it has to be a shot in a tall glass of Grapefruit, Orange or Pineapple juice. A single slurp off a drink made with Rum and my muscles start to cramp up, to a shot of Strawberry Brandy that put me in the ER with hives on my ankles, neck and eyes, with trouble breathing.
My body's reaction made it really easy for me to make a decision where to draw the line with drinking and fortunately it is hereditary and it appears at least one of my children have the same reaction as me.

It looks as I read the thread that wuli has the physiological reasons for "intuition" and Cheryl, MJA and my thoughts are what "intuition" looks like when it is playing out.

Prove to me Bannon hates me and I'll hate him back, but suggest to me he hates Jews and I won't care. The truth is that at some level we all hate each other, but I'm content accepting what appears at and just below the surface and not in distilling out every difference we have so that we can justify hating one another.Hanover

    Bingo!
Now, why aren't you investing in the American economy? 8-)
  • Leaving PF
Yes, but it's obscene when you get use that failure to avoid paying taxes for 20 years.aequilibrium
Why is it obscene to be given tax credit for a business you invested real dollars into that later failed? The dollars that Paul was paid for PF was not play money, it was real money. The purchaser had to earn/gather that investment money to pay Paul (to rob Peter ;) ) and it was clean money so the transaction was legal.
If the current owner of PF purchased 100 sites total at 20k each, he would have an initial investment of 2 million dollars, before a single ad is placed on any of the sites. If PF was successful in the transition and revenue from the ads rolled in, he might make a profit of 5k the first year. That would mean PF is operating in the red, as far as their investment is concerned and could very well be for the first 3 years of new ownership.
But if their profit off the other 99 sites bumps them ever so gently up against the next tax rate, a strategic loss could be/would be something to consider.

So.. Tiff. Reality check. You know as well as I do what kind of man Trump is. You know as well as I do that trying to make this about Bill Clinton is a diversion.Mongrel
As long as Hillary is sending out Bill to campaign for her, then "diversion" or not, it makes his prior behavior or lack of judgement, while occupying the same office, fair game.
Decency is another term for moral fortitude, to which I suggest that NO one in this race has an ounce of.

No, but I have no more pity for him than I will have for Trump when he loses. — Baden
Baden, are you of the mindset that words spoken are equal to actions taken? Mr. Clinton not only disrespected the highest office of my country but he allowed his wife Hillary, to go on national media and say that the women accusing Bill Clinton are a part of some right wing conspiracy.
Gosh, golly gee, I wonder if Hillary would feel the same, if it was Chelsea that was being portrayed not as a victim but rather as a master manipulator. :s

What I don't get is why someone would pay $20k for a site and then just let it completely go down the tubes. There are a lot better/more fun ways to burn through $20k if you've got that much surplus money sitting around to waste.Terrapin Station

There are some benefits to purchasing an investment that then later fails. If you make enough money in your overall investments, having an investment go belly up is a great way to reduce your taxable income.

You followed the right path my friend. Never doubt that memories are worth more than "stuff".

None the less, I understand and live the fear of not having any savings, pensions or SS which is due to run out 5 years before I retire. My decision? My way of dealing with the fear? Is to take a little retirement each day understanding that the golden days of yesteryear don't exist now, if they ever did at all. I asked my Grandfather of 92 years when the "Golden" years were? He shocked me when he said it is all a scam, they don't exist.
This little forum on the net, this small group of like thinkers and friends are all part of my daily retirement intake. A very positive one at that!

Hey, why not try volunteering at a church or food bank? Start a Grateful Journal, write down something each day that you are grateful for. Some days it will be a BIG thing to be grateful for and other days it will be a modest grateful but never let a day pass that leaves you without being grateful for being alive and with someone you love~ On New Years Eve, read your journal with your love and tie it with a bow, put it on a shelf and begin a new Grateful Journal for the new year. You will be gently surprised at all that you have been through and still made it through, because that is the kind of people you and your wife are.

  • Is addiction a genetic disease?
ArguingWAristotleTiff, is it perhaps that you somehow feel that if there is a biological component to addiction, one can feel less "guilty" of having been addicted? I think there is no shame in addiction either way, whether it be psychological or genes. I know how a little partying can, before you know it, turn into a full blown hard drug addiction. I know how something so "taboo" can become "normal" very soon. I know how there can be a paradoxical freedom in using: i felt temporarily free, though while actually I was imprisoned in an addiction.Wilco Lensink

I apologize for the delay in my response as life has had my immediate attention for a while. First let me welcome you to The Philosophy Forum! Your opening post is very defined and over time you will figure out the bells and whistles of the forum, till then, keep on thinking!

In response to your reply, I took some time to think about what you said about "guilt" which is something I never really equated to addiction. My first addiction was my choice and it was at a time in life when I did not have the responsibility of a family to care for. As far as I have worked through my first addiction, I quit on my own terms, at the time of my own choosing, because I was losing everything I valued and realized that my 'friends' weren't really "friends" but rather people who shared in my addiction so when I went clean in my body, I had to cut off relations with every person who was attached to the habit. I essentially had to start over, from zero. My take away was, that even though I stayed awake for a year and was experiencing the consequences, I lived a LOT in that year and if I had to do over again, I would likely make the same choices. It was a chapter in my life that gave me more "character" as I call the storms I have endured and come out the other side with something positive to compartmentalize that experience with allowing me to move onto the NEXT.

My second addiction didn't have any guilt at ALL attached as I had a Doctor prescribing me my addiction. At this point I did have a family and children to be responsible for but my injury was real as was the healing time. No guilt. Though over the years, I have come across pictures that I am in, but I have very little recollection of but I have a dear best girl friend who has filled in the spaces for me.

I can see the correlation in how a phrase like "predisposition to addiction" could offer some wiggle room when it comes to knowledge becoming a self fulfilling prophecy but I am willing to take that risk.

Is it wrong for me to not feel guilty about having an addiction?

With society as addicted as it is today, I am fairly confident that the exposure to addictive activities will arise, regardless of my warning my Indians or not. I think sharing this knowledge with them opens up a line of communication in regards to addiction.

Overcoming an acute addiction is one hell of a feat, something I personally am proud of and encourage in others. Some addicts fear sobriety more than they do death. So to stare down an addiction within yourself is absolutely an accomplishment but the chances of a relapse is enormous. Many addicts channel their addictive tendencies to another form, when they are stopping an acute addiction.

What is the difference between a habit and an addiction?
  • Is addiction a genetic disease?
I believe that some people have a predisposition to addictive tendencies. I know that in my own family we have an addictive 'tick' on one side. Meaning as far back as Italy, members of my family on my Dad's side have become addicts to various activities such as drinking, women, drugs, infidelity, everything short of gambling but I would include that because it has the potential to have the same grip as the other addictions.
Even though the way we are raised and environment (nurture) plays a huge role in addiction, I believe that the individual's genetic make up (nature) plays a larger role in addiction, simply because it is a hidden 'trigger'. Many people before hitting rock bottom from an addiction, will think that their problem is based on their inability to control one's own free will but after recovery one might find that their own 'will' was not as 'free' as they once thought.
I have found it a benefit to know that I have an addictive personality, especially since I am a recovering addict 8-) and as a result, have been up front with my two Indians and they 'get' it. Hopefully they will know what to do with 'it'. (Y)

  • Smart Terrorism
The next step, presumably, although neither leader was specific, will probably include the sending of ground troops to fight in Syria and Iraq in addition to the bombing campaigns now being mounted by both countries and Russia. This is an extension and intensification of current policy rather than a new venture, and, to judge by the Russian experience in Afghanistan and ours in Afghanistan and Iraq, the chances for destroying ISIS are small. Those chances will be lessened if we also attempt to “regime change” in Syria.Saphsin
The idea of Putin and Trump making joint decisions gives me pause but Clinton and Putin making joint decisions stops my heart.

Count up the innocent deaths, and you will find that we are way ahead in the race to barbarism. I find all this outrage highly inappropriate; "How could they?" "How can they be stopped?" are the wrong questions. Replace 'they' with 'we'.unenlightened

Is this about a body count? Because if it is, let us not leave out the MILLIONS of people who are fleeing their homes by land and by sea, many times losing their lives in the process. Must there be a body count? It does us no good my friend.
People, rational, logical people, people like you AND me, are weighing the safety of staying in their homeland, being killed and crucified or sending their loved ones off, on overloaded boats, with fake life vests, on the open sea, headed for what? A chance to live and not die at the hands of barbarians.
Pardon me if I give those fleeing the benefit of the doubt.

Genders have become a symptom of special snowflake syndrome. Just get rid of gender entirely and call yourself a human being who has a certain genitalia.darthbarracuda

Let me just say that I for one, as a woman, consider myself a "special snowflake" regardless of what others think. O:)
MY Gender, issued by my creator (whomever that is) when I was conceived or shortly after that and that has allowed ME the choice to procreate if I so chose. (L)

    1) How much is "enough" and how do you know when it's"enough"?Mayor of Simpleton
Enough is what you have and always will have if you never stop to check but just believe. (L)
Like the philosophy that the Roadrunner taught us in chasing the Coyote. The Roadrunner never looked down to see if he had 'enough' ground to keep running on, so his forward momentum and belief that he would have 'enough' kept him alive.
Where as the Coyote who was chasing the Roadrunner, would question whether or not he had 'enough' and when he did stop to check his belief, he lost his momentum and ran out of 'enough'.
Moral of the story? Believe that you will have 'enough' by the time you need 'enough' and keep on moving forward. 8-)
